About St Joseph's Mission Hospital

Your Health is Our Concern - Serving Kilgoris with Excellence

Hospital Background

St Joseph's Mission Hospital, Kilgoris (SJMHK), is a faith-based health institution owned and operated by the Catholic Diocese of Ngong (CDoN). Located near Kilgoris town in Transmara, Narok County, the hospital was founded in 1963 by the Little Sisters of St Joseph (LSSJ) from the Netherlands.

The hospital was established in response to the urgent need for accessible healthcare, when residents and mission communities had to travel long distances to Kisii for essential services. Support from Medical Mission Action (MEMISA), and later from the Dutch government beginning in 1973, enabled growth in buildings, equipment, medical supplies, and technical expertise. By the 1980s, SJMHK had grown into a 250-bed facility and housed a nationally recognized nursing school.

Despite periods of decline linked to leadership transitions, local dynamics, and healthcare financing shifts such as the move from NHIF to SHA, SJMHK has remained resilient. The hospital continues to provide inpatient and outpatient care, paediatrics, maternity, pharmacy, laboratory, imaging, and other essential clinical support services while implementing a strategic turnaround for long-term sustainability.
